LIGHT Phals can grow easily in filtered sun. In the home a East window is ideal. You can use a South or West window if you put a sheer curtain between the Phal and the window. You can grow them well in artificial light. They grow well in offices that are well lit for 9 hours or more.
TEMPERATURE The best temperature range is 85oF during the day and 68oF at night. You can go as low as 60oF at night and as high as 95oF during the day. As you can see if you are comfortable so is the Phal.
WATER Only water in the morning so that the plant will dry before dark. This will prevent the plant from rotting. In a sink water the plant thoroughly with room temperature water until it comes out of the bottom of the pot. Water the plant again when it is almost dry. Do not let Phals dry completely. The best way to gauge when a Phal needs watering is to pick it up when it has just been watered. This will give you an idea of what it weights wet. In about 3 days pick it up again. If it feels much lighter water it, if not wait a day or 2. Most of the year you will water 2 times a week.
HUMIDITY Phals love a humid area. In a house you can put your Phal on a dish with pebbles. Add water to the pebbles so that the Phal pot never touches the water. Mist the pant in the morning if you like.
FERTILIZER I suggest you fertilize you Phal at 1/4 strength twice a month. Use a balanced formula such as 20-20-20. The fertilizer for African Violets works fine. The best fertilizer is one used for hydroponics.
POTTING Phals like to be potted every year. This should be done in the spring. There are many types of potting mixtures for Phals. The one we use is 10 parts bark, 1 part sponge rock, and 1 part chopped New Zealand moss. A potting mix like this can be found in many nurseries
